Trying the decypher the English meaning behind Gaelic place-names can sometimes be straightforward. For anyone with a deeper interest, there is a wonderful book called “The Gaelic Place-names of Carloway, Isle of Lewis.” Almost 400 pages of rigorous research by Dr Richard Cox. Though local, it can be applied more broadly. However, Stac an Amadana is not amongst its entries. A good friend who was born and brought up in Dalmore doesn’t recall it ever having a name, except that he was forbidden to swim out to it, because of the surrounding riptides and undercurrents. This fits because its literal translation is Rock of the Fools, or Rock of the Idiots.
